Breakdown

Drive Post is a trips formation concept out of Shotgun Trips TE that stacks a deep post with an underneath drive route to attack Cover 4 and other zone shells. From the trips side, the outside receiver clears vertically before breaking to a corner route up the sideline, while the inside slot receiver runs the drive route flat across the field underneath. The tight end works a shallow crossing route to the flat, and the post route from the single receiver side splits the safeties down the middle of the field, giving the QB a clean progression from the deep post to the drive route underneath if the safety bites.

Defensive Reads

Read the safety alignment before the snap, if both safeties are aligned deep and equal width this is a Cover 4 look that the post route is designed to exploit. Watch the flow of the underneath linebackers after the snap, if they widen out to cover the drive route it opens a throwing lane for the post behind them. Key the cornerback on the trips side, if he sinks with the corner route instead of squatting on the drive route it signals zone coverage and the post should be open behind the safety rotation. User controlled safeties who cheat toward the post pre-snap will leave the drive route wide open underneath, so identify any defender lurking in the middle of the field before committing to the post throw. Man coverage with no safety help over the top completely shuts down the post route, so if you see man alignment on the outside receivers, bail out to the drive route or check down quickly instead of forcing the deep shot.

Usage Tips

Look for two high safeties pre-snap since this concept is built as a Cover 4 beater and the post route is designed to split the safeties if they stay flat footed at the snap.

Progress read from the post route first, then work down to the drive route crossing underneath if the safeties squeeze the middle of the field.

Use the corner route from the trips side outside receiver as a hot read against Cover 2 or Cover 4 zone shells that widen their cornerbacks late.

Pair this play with Verticals or China Y Post in the same set to keep defenses honest on their safety rotation and force them to declare shell before the snap.

Call this on second and medium or third and long situations where defenses are more likely to sit in a four across shell, since the post attacks vertical seams created by that alignment.
