China Y Post out of Shotgun Trips TE lines up three receivers to the left with the Y (TE) running a deep post from the middle stack, while the two outside trips receivers run a deep corner or go route and a shallow drag underneath. The backside X receiver runs a deep comeback breaking to the sideline, and the HB releases into a flat route to the boundary side for a checkdown against blitz. This is a man beater built to attack the middle of the field, with the Y post creating natural pick action against man defenders trying to stay with the drag route underneath, and the deep comeback giving a built-in answer versus single high safety looks. Primary read progression starts with the Y post attacking the deep middle, works down to the drag/flat combo underneath if the post is capped, and ends with the backside comeback as a hot outlet versus soft coverage.

Defensive Reads

Identify single high safety pre-snap, this tips man coverage or a single high zone shell where the Y post can split the defense. Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap, a shallow drop signals he will jump the drag route and open a window for the post behind him. If the defense shows two deep safeties (cover 2 or cover 4), expect the post to get squeezed, look to the drag and flat combo underneath as the primary answer instead. Key the cornerback over the trips side, if he presses at the line it usually means man coverage, and the post has a strong chance to separate on the break. Watch for a user controlled linebacker sitting in the shallow middle as a lurk threat, he can rob the drag route and bait the post throw into a turnover if you rush the read.

Usage Tips

Use this play on second and long or third and medium when you need a big chunk gain over the middle of the field.

Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see single high or man match coverage the Y post is going to have room to work against linebackers dropping late.

Hot route the HB to a stay-in block if the defense shows a heavy blitz look, since the flat route will not get open in time versus a five or six man rush.

Pair this play with Dagger Texas or Deep In from the same set to keep the defense guessing between deep middle shots and quick underground breaks.

User the Y post receiver manually against zone coverage to rip through soft spots between the linebackers and the safety, then trust the comeback route as your dump off if the middle gets crowded.
