Cheat Clearout Seam lines up from Shotgun Trips TE and uses the two-man side (bottom of the diagram) to clear out the underneath zones while the seam route splits the middle of the field. The trips side runs a clearout with one receiver breaking to the corner up top and the other running an arrow/flat route underneath to occupy short defenders, while the lone receiver on the backside runs a hitch and out combo to hold the corner. The seam is the primary read, designed to work behind linebackers and in front of safeties, making this an effective man and zone beater depending on the leverage of the middle defenders.
Watch for linebackers sitting in hook or curl zones, if they widen with the clearout route the seam lane opens immediately. Identify single high safety shells, this play attacks the intermediate middle where a lone deep safety has to cover significant ground. Key on user-controlled defenders dropping into a lurk position over the seam, a smart defender sitting in that window can undercut the throw before it develops. Cover 3 with aggressive underneath flow can shut this down if the flat defender stays home instead of biting on the clearout action. Man coverage with a linebacker matched on the seam is the ideal matchup for the offense, look for that mismatch pre-snap based on personnel alignment.
Read the safety depth before the snap, if the safety sits shallow or shows two high, the seam window will be tighter so look to the corner route as your first alternative.
Use motion if available to identify man versus zone before the snap, if the defender follows across the formation it confirms man coverage and opens up the seam against a trailing linebacker.
This play works best on second and medium or third and short to medium since the seam requires a linebacker to bite on the underneath clearout route first.
Pair this call with Verticals or China Y Post from the same set to keep defenses honest on seam and post concepts, then come back to Cheat Clearout Seam once safeties start cheating toward the boundary.
If the defense shows heavy blitz pre-snap, hot route the flat runner into a quick option route to give the quarterback an outlet against pressure.
