Breakdown

Slants out of Shotgun Trips TE lines up with three receivers to one side and a solo receiver to the other, and the route diagram shows a true slant concept designed to attack underneath windows quickly. The trips side runs a slant, a shallow crosser, and a corner route stacked in a triangle read, while the backside X runs a slant against man leverage and the RB releases to the flat as a checkdown outlet. This is a man beater at its core, built to exploit inside leverage and get the ball out fast against blitz looks, with the primary read starting at the backside slant before working into the trips triangle if the corner route clears the underneath defenders.

Defensive Reads

Watch for cornerback press alignment on the backside X, since man coverage there means the slant wins instantly on the release. Key the safety depth before the snap, because a single high safety cheating toward trips signals Cover 3 and invites the corner route to clear space for the underneath slants. Identify user controlled lurk defenders sitting in the shallow cross lane, as a smart user will jump the crossing route and bait the quick throw. Recognize Cover 2 shells by corner depth, since hard flat drops from the corners can undercut both the slant and the RB flat route simultaneously. Look for blitz tells such as linebackers creeping to the line, which this quick game concept is designed to punish before the pressure gets home.

Usage Tips

Get to the line quickly and check the corner alignment on the backside X, since press man with no safety help is the green light to fire the slant immediately.

Use the trips side triangle read when the defense shows off coverage, letting the corner route pull the safety while the slant and shallow cross settle into the void underneath.

Hot route the RB to a stick or angle if you diagnose zone, since the flat route can get swallowed by underneath defenders sitting on the slants.

Pair this with PA Boot Shot or PA Slot Corner from the same set to keep the defense honest once they start jumping the quick slant throws.

Best used on early downs or third and short where the quick game timing beats blitz pressure before it arrives, especially against nano blitz packages that crowd the box.
