Breakdown

Texas out of Shotgun Trips TE (11 personnel) is a five man route concept built to attack the sideline with a natural pick and clear out combo. The lone receiver backside runs a shallow out that immediately turns upfield, while the two inside receivers on that side stack a corner route over an out breaking underneath route, creating a high low read on the boundary corner. On the trips side, the concept flips into a deep dig crossing under a vertical seam, giving the quarterback a two way stretch on the field side linebackers and safeties. This is a man beater at heart because of the natural rub action from the stacked releases, but the deep in cut against zone drops also gives it zone beating value on the trips side.

Defensive Reads

Watch the flat defender or nickel corner on the trips side, if he sinks too deep on the vertical seam the deep in route will sit wide open behind him. Key the backside cornerback's leverage, if he is playing outside leverage in man coverage the out and up route has a clean release to the sideline. Identify any late blitz pressure from the linebacker level, since the deep dig and corner routes take time to develop this play is vulnerable to a well timed nano blitz. Cover 3 with a hard flat corner squats on the underneath out route, forcing the quarterback to hold the ball and progress to the deep dig read. User controlled lurk defenders sitting in the middle hook zone can undercut the deep in route, so be ready to move to the backside out and up if that read is jumped.

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two deep safeties this concept has room to work the deep dig on the trips side since the middle of the field is open.

If the corner is playing press man on the backside out and up route, expect natural rub leverage from the stacked release, so trust that route to break open against man coverage.

Use the deep in route as your first read against zone coverage since it settles into soft spots between the linebacker and safety zones.

Pair this play with RPO Alert Bubble or Slot Quick Flat in your play calling sequence to keep the defense honest on quick game before hitting them with the longer developing Texas routes.

Best called on second or third and medium to long since the routes need time to develop, avoid using this on obvious passing downs where the defense can sit on deep routes.
