Slot Swing out of Shotgun Trips TE (11 personnel) is a quick-hitting pass concept built around two staggered out routes from the trips side and a swing route out of the backfield. The two inside trips receivers break outside at different depths, creating a natural stagger against zone drops, while the backside X runs a vertical release to hold the far corner and safety honest. The lone backside receiver on the near side also flashes into the flat, giving the QB a built-in outlet against blitz. Primary progression starts with the shorter out route from the middle trips receiver, works to the deeper out from the outside trips receiver, and checks down to the swing or flat route if the underneath windows are clogged.

Defensive Reads

Read the flat defender first. If he widens with the swing route, the shallow out route from the middle trips receiver will sit in the vacated window. Key the curl to flat linebacker's drop depth. A shallow drop opens the deeper out route from the outside trips receiver over the top. Watch for a user defender lurking underneath the trips stagger. If the user sits on the shallow out, throw the deeper out route immediately. Against man coverage, this concept struggles unless the swing route can win outside quickly, so identify press man or trail technique on the backside before the snap. Blitz-heavy looks with a corner blitz off the trips side can disrupt the timing on the outs, so account for the extra rusher and be ready to hit the swing route as a fast checkdown.

Usage Tips

Use this against Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells where the underneath zone defenders have to widen for the trips side, opening the stagger read between the two out routes.

Pre-snap, check the flat defender and curl to flat linebacker depth. If they are sitting shallow, the deeper out route will be open behind them.

Hot route the backside vertical into a quick slant or drag if you see man coverage and need a faster release against a corner blitz.

This play works well on second and medium or third and short since the swing and short out routes give the QB a safe underneath answer with YAC potential.
