Shock H Option is a trips-side pass concept out of Shotgun Trips HB Wk with 10 personnel. The backside X runs a vertical release up the sideline while the trips side stacks an option route out of the backfield, a deep out breaking to the boundary, a vertical seam, and a quick option route from the inline slot that reads the flow of the nearest defender. The blocking is a five man protection at the line, so the primary read starts with the option route at the bottom of the numbers before working up to the deep out and vertical seam against zone drops.
Watch linebacker depth pre-snap, if they are sitting shallow they are keying the option route and will jump the underneath break Identify single high safety looks as a green light for the vertical seam route since it means less help over the top on the trips side Man coverage on the option route runner shows immediate separation off the break, so user defenders need to sit inside and not bite on the initial release Zone shells with a hard flat defender can take away the deep out, forcing the quarterback to climb the progression to the seam route Watch for a nano blitz off the edge since the five man protection can be exposed if the defense brings extra pressure from the backside
Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two high shells this play is designed to attack the soft spot underneath with the option route
Use the option route as your first read against man coverage since it breaks off the defender leverage and creates instant separation
Against zone coverage, work the deep out on the trips side since it settles in the void between the flat and deep defenders
Pair this play with Zona Fade or Curls from the same set to keep defenses honest on the trips side without changing your formation tendencies
This play works best on 2nd or 3rd and medium when you need a high percentage completion but still want a shot at the vertical seam if the safety bites on the option route
