Quick Slants out of Shotgun Trips HB Wk aligns three receivers to one side with the HB set to the weak side for a check release. Both boundary X receivers run hard slants breaking inside at the top of their stem, while the trips side runs a shallow cross underneath and a slot receiver works a short out breaking away from traffic. The HB releases into a short flare or check release depending on protection, giving the QB a fast underneath progression built to beat man coverage and blitz pressure with a quick, high percentage throw.
Key the cornerback depth at the snap, if they play with inside shade or trail technique the slant window will be tight so user the nearest defender to jump the route. Watch for Cover 3 sink from the flat defender, a shallow drop by the corner or safety can undercut the shallow cross and bait a pick six. Identify blitz packages pre-snap by checking linebacker depth, a stacked box or walked up nickel usually signals pressure that this quick concept is designed to beat. Spy the middle linebacker's drop on the snap, if he sits in the shallow cross lane it forces the QB to work outside to the slants instead. Man beater shells like Cover 1 or Cover 0 get exposed hard here, but a disciplined Cover 2 with squatting corners on the slant angle can shut this down if the QB does not throw with anticipation.
Fire this play on early downs or third and short when you need a guaranteed completion against pressure. Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing man coverage with corners playing tight technique, since the slants will win instantly against off man or trail technique. If you see a two high shell with soft corners, hot route the backside slant into a fade or speed out to attack the vacated flat. Use the HB check release as your blitz beater read, if the defense brings extra rushers, dump it to the back immediately rather than forcing the slant into a blitzer's lane. Pair this play with Curls or Stick from the same set to keep the defense honest on route depth, then come back to Quick Slants once linebackers start sitting on shorter zone drops.
