Levels Switch is a trips-based Cover 2 beater run from Shotgun Trips HB Wk with 10 personnel. The three trips receivers run a switch-release Levels concept: the outside WR crosses underneath to the shallow middle, the slot WR climbs to the intermediate crossing route over the top, and the inner-most trips WR sits at a shorter cross beneath both, stacking three horizontal stems at different depths across the field. The backside X runs a vertical seal route up the numbers to hold the corner and safety, while the HB releases out of the backfield on a swing/flat route as a checkdown against blitz. The primary read progression starts with the deep in-breaker off the switch release, works down to the shallow crosser, and ends with the HB in the flat.
Watch the two safeties pre-snap: if they are aligned with equal depth in a two-high shell, the levels crossers are live and the defense is likely sitting in Cover 2 or Cover 4, which this play is designed to exploit. Post-snap, key the underneath linebackers and nickel defender to see if they widen with the switch release or stay put, since a defender who does not respect the switch will get picked off by the natural rub. Watch for a user-controlled defender flashing down into the shallow cross lane (a lurk defender), which signals the user is jumping the short route and the deep in-breaker over the top should be open. Cover 3 with a hard-sinking flat defender can shut down the HB checkdown, so if you see three deep defenders post-snap be ready to hold the ball longer for the levels crossers to clear. Man coverage with press corners can disrupt the switch release timing at the line, so if you see man alignment pre-snap consider hot routing the backside vertical to a quicker breaking route to beat the trail technique.
Pre-snap, identify two-high shells since this play is tagged as a Cover 2 beater and the levels stems are designed to stretch the underneath zone defenders vertically and horizontally. If the defense shows single-high or man coverage, check the backside vertical route first since the switch release can create natural rub separation against man defenders trailing. Use the HB swing route as your answer versus disguised blitzes or when the underneath linebackers sink hard into the levels concept, since it is a quick outlet against pressure. Pair this play with Zona Fade or 60 Go from the same set to keep defenses honest on vertical shots after you have shown Levels Switch a few times to bait them into sitting on the crossers. Call this on second or third and medium since the levels stems need time to develop but also give the quarterback an easy access throw underneath if the rush gets home.
