HB Off Tackle out of Shotgun Trips HB Wk is a designed run play with the HB aligned next to the QB, taking the handoff and pressing the point of attack outside the tackle box. The line blocks down at the point of attack while the offense uses the trips receiver bunch to occupy the defense's numbers on the perimeter, pulling defenders away from the interior gap the back is attacking. This is a run scheme built to beat light boxes and overaggressive zone or man defenses that get sucked toward the trips side, with the primary read being the HB pressing the off tackle hole first before bouncing outside if the edge defender crashes down.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a heavy box pre-snap, if the defense stacks eight or more defenders near the line this play loses its advantage and you should bail to a quick game concept instead. Key the play side defensive end and outside linebacker, if they crash hard down the line the HB should bounce this outside immediately. Man coverage on the trips receivers with no extra run support in the box is the ideal look for this play since it removes an extra defender from the run fit. User linebacker flow is the biggest threat, a good user will sit and read the mesh point then flow to fill the off tackle gap, so vary your run direction and pace to keep that user honest. Zone blitzes and edge pressure packages that crash both the end and the alley defender can blow this up quickly, so have a hot route or checkdown ready if you see extra rushers stacking the edge pre-snap.

Usage Tips

Check the defensive front pre-snap and confirm you have a numbers advantage in the box before committing to this run, ideally six or fewer defenders in the box against 11 personnel spacing.

Use motion or a hard count to bait linebackers into flowing early, then let the HB press the hole and read the first key block off the edge.

Pair this with HB Direct or QB Blast from the same set to keep defenses guessing on downhill run direction without changing personnel or formation.

Mix in Read Option or RPO Alert Bubble from the same set so defenses cannot sit on the run fit without opening up bubble and perimeter throws.

Best called on early downs or short yardage when you want to control tempo, and most effective against base 4-3 or 3-4 fronts that struggle to fill the off tackle gap quickly.
