Zona Slot Out is a quick-hitting zone beater out of Shotgun Trips HB Wk that isolates the slot receiver on a sharp out route to attack the boundary against off coverage and zone drops. The trips side occupies underneath defenders with vertical stems while the backside receiver and HB provide check down options against a blitz look. Primary read progression starts with the slot out breaking to the flat, then works to the backside if the corner sits low or a robber sags into the throwing lane.
Pre-snap, identify if the corner over the trips slot is playing a soft shell or has safety help rotating to that side, since two high safeties with off corners invite the out route. Watch for a user-controlled defender flashing down into the flat zone, which signals a Cover 3 sky or cloud rotation that can jump the out route if you telegraph the throw. Post-snap, key the underneath linebacker depth: if he sinks late instead of widening to the flat, the out sits in a clean window and should be thrown with anticipation. This play struggles against man coverage with a press corner on the slot receiver, since there is no natural rub or pick to create separation off the line. Blitz packages that bring extra pressure from the trips side can shut this down quickly, so check the protection and be ready to check down to the HB if the out route is not open by your third step.
Use this on second and short to second and long when the defense shows Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells, since the out route sits right in the void between the flat defender and deep third corner.
Pre-snap, check the corner over the slot receiver: if he is playing outside leverage with no safety help rotating down, throw the out on time without hesitation.
Hot route the backside receiver into a quick slant or drag if you see man coverage across the board, since the out concept alone struggles against man beaters without a rub.
Pair this with Mtn Slot Curls or Curl Slot Dig from the same set to keep defenders guessing between out breaking routes and curl or dig combos attacking the same intermediate zones.
Sequence this play after Bubble Screen or Quick Slants earlier in a series to bait linebackers into sitting shallow, then hit the out route over the top of their zone drop.
