Double Screen out of Shotgun Trips HB Wk sends the trips receivers upfield to occupy underneath defenders while the outside receiver on the backside runs a screen release to the left, and the HB releases to the right flat behind a wall of blockers. The offensive line and near backs sell pass protection for a beat before releasing to lead block, disguising the screen as a standard drop back look. This is a screen play built to bait aggressive pass rushers and blitz-heavy man coverage, with the primary read progressing from the HB screen to the right first, then working back to the backside WR screen if the underneath defenders overcommit outside.
Watch for defensive ends and outside linebackers crashing hard upfield off the edge, that aggressive pursuit is exactly what springs the HB screen for a big gain. Man coverage with blitz packages is the most vulnerable shell here since defenders turn their backs to the backfield and lose the screen developing behind them. Sit a linebacker or safety in a lurk spot on the HB side to jump the screen passing lane, this single defensive read can blow up the entire concept. Zone coverage with disciplined underneath defenders holding their gaps is the toughest shell to attack, since those defenders can read screen and rally before blockers set up. Check post-snap for a spy or scraping linebacker staying home against the run fake, that defender is your key indicator the screen is covered and you should reset to another concept next play.
Call this on early downs or second and long when the defense has shown a tendency to bring pressure, since blitzers running upfield create the alley this screen needs.
Check the pre-snap defensive front for stacked boxes or overload blitz looks to the HB side, that is your green light to trust the right side screen first.
If the defense shows soft zone with linebackers sitting at the line, consider hot routing the trips receivers into quick option routes instead of forcing the screen into a crowded shell.
Pair this with Read Option or Inside Zone from the same Trips HB Wk set so the defense respects the run fake and widens its pursuit angles, making the screen blockers easier to spring.
Use the backside WR screen as your changeup once the defense adjusts to spy the HB, since the leftward flow will look identical pre-snap.
