Inside Cross is a man beater out of Shotgun Trips HB Wk that sends a crosser working underneath from the trips side across the field while a complementary route occupies the opposite hook zone or shallow area, creating natural rub and pick opportunities against man coverage. The HB stays in as a check release or flares to the flat, giving you a built in dump off against pressure. Primary progression starts with the crosser working across the middle of the field, then works to the underneath route sitting down in the void, and finally checks down to the HB out of the backfield if the initial reads are covered.
Watch for press man corners on the trips side presnap, that alignment confirms man coverage and tells you the crosser will have room to work against the grain Key the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he sits shallow in a hook zone he can undercut the crosser and jump the throw so look to the HB check release instead Identify Cover 3 by the single high safety presnap combined with corners playing off, this shell allows underneath defenders to sink and take away the cross so hot route to a quick hitting zone beater Look for a user controlled defender spying the middle of the field or sliding into the crosser lane post snap, that lurk technique is the biggest threat to this concept and should trigger your checkdown read Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge while leaving man coverage on the outside are ideal for this play since the crosser gets open quickly before pressure arrives, but zone blitzes that drop a defender into the crossing lane will shut it down
Presnap identify man versus zone by checking if the trips side corners are lined up in press or off man alignment, since the crosser thrives against man coverage with the natural rub from trips traffic
Hot route the backside receiver into a hitch or quick out if you see Cover 3 sink underneath, that gives you an immediate zone beater option without waiting on the cross to develop
Use this on second and medium to second and long situations where the defense is more likely to sit in man coverage expecting a run threat from the HB alignment
Pair this with Mesh Spot or Dragon Stick in the same set to keep the defense guessing between crossing combos and stick concepts, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their zone drops
If you see the user flowing hard to the crosser presnap or showing a lurk defender sitting in that throwing lane, check the play down to the HB check release for an easy underneath completion
