HB Base is a straightforward dive run out of the Shotgun Trips HB Wk set with 10 personnel, sending the HB straight up the middle behind the interior line. The offensive line blocks down with a standard run scheme, sealing the point of attack while the trips receivers and slot run off their defenders to widen the box. This is a downhill run play, not a man or zone beater passing concept, and the primary read is simply hitting the hole as it opens between the guards, with the HB reading his blockers for the first crease.
Watch for a stacked front with linebackers sitting tight to the line, since that alignment clogs the interior gaps this play is designed to hit. Check if the defense keeps only two down linemen or shows a 4-3 under front, as lighter boxes let the HB find the crease faster. Man coverage on the trips side pulls defenders away from the box, which opens up run lanes for this dive. Look for safeties creeping down into the box pre-snap, a strong indicator of a run blitz or run commit call that will beat this play at the mesh point. Post-snap, respect any user-controlled defender flowing downhill immediately, since a diagnosed dive with quick linebacker fills shuts down the play before the back can get vertical.
Use HB Base on early downs when the defense shows a light box or has rotated safeties out of the alignment to cover the trips bunch. Check the pre-snap alignment for stacked linebackers or an extra defender crashing down, since that signals a run blitz that this dive cannot beat. Pair this play with Read Option or Inside Zone from the same set so the defense has to respect multiple run looks out of identical formations. Mix in Bubble Screen or Quick Slants afterward to punish defenses that start selling hard on the run once they see HB Base a few times. Best called on first and second down in short yardage or when you need to keep the offense on schedule without exposing the QB to unnecessary risk.
