Breakdown

Mtn Shock HB Option lines up in Shotgun Trips HB Wk with 10 personnel and motions the HB from the backfield out to a swing/option route into the boundary, giving the QB an easy check down against blitz looks. On the trips side, the outside receiver runs a corner/vertical breaking route while the inside slot receiver runs a deep post that stems inside the safety, and the single receiver on the backside runs a flat then hooks outside on an out route. This is a play-action style progression pass built to attack both man and zone coverage: the HB option is the pressure and hot beater, the post is the man beater over the top, and the corner route is the zone beater against a two high shell. Primary progression is HB option first (check the box for blitz), then work to the post/corner combo on the trips side based on the safety's leverage.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense shifts a linebacker or defensive back with the HB motion, this tells you if you are facing man or zone coverage. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker's drop, if he sinks into the post route's lane the QB should reset to the corner route on the trips side. Watch for a user controlled safety sitting in the deep middle, this is the primary threat to the post route and can bait a costly interception if thrown into. Nano blitzes off the edge are neutralized by the HB option since it releases immediately into the flat, use this against aggressive four man rush teams. Cover 2 shells with jamming corners can wall off the flat option, in this case work the post and corner combo since the safeties are split wide.

Usage Tips

Motion the HB before the snap to get a pre-snap read on man versus zone, if a defender follows the motion it is man coverage and you should hot route the post to a slant for a quicker win.

Use this play on early downs or third and short since the HB option is a built in check down against blitz and protects against negative plays.

Against a two high safety shell, prioritize the corner route on the trips side since the safety over the top will be occupied by the post route runner.

Pair this play with Mtn Slot Curls or Curls from the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick game and the option based progression.

If the defense shows Cover 3 with a single high safety, look immediately to the post route since it will split the seam between the deep third defenders.
