Defensive Reads

Zone coverages like Cover 3 or Cover 4 that ask cornerbacks to sink deep will struggle to account for the slide route settling underneath, since it sits in the seam of the flat and hook zones. Man coverage with a deep safety rolled over the backside vertical shuts down that route, so be ready to move to the slide or seam routes if you see the safety cheating to that side pre-snap. Cover 2 shells with hard flat defenders can jump the slide route early, so recognize aggressive cornerback press alignment before committing to that throw. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge pressure the quarterback before the seams fully develop, so have a quick answer ready with the slide route as a built in hot throw against pressure.

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two high safeties the slide route into the window behind the underneath zone defenders is your first read.

Against man coverage, immediately look to the backside vertical route since it isolates a single defender with no help over the top in most Cover 1 or Cover 0 looks.

Use this play on second or third and medium situations where the sideline route conversion and seam shots both create explosive play potential.

Pair 60 Slide with 60 Go earlier in a drive so the defense respects the vertical shell, then come back to the slide concept to attack underneath zone defenders who bite on the seams.

Motion is not built in here, so use pre-snap shifts or a quick strafe to bait linebackers before committing to your read.
