The offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme, working double teams at the point of attack and climbing to the second level to handle linebackers, while the trips receivers run off coverage to hold defenders away from the box. The primary read is the frontside combo block: the HB presses the line and reads the first double team, working through his zone track to find the cutback lane if the frontside gap is clogged.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap check the safety depth, a single high safety often signals extra run support in the box which makes this a tougher run fit, while two deep safeties usually means lighter boxes and better cutback lanes. Watch the linebacker depth at the snap, linebackers sitting shallow and reading gaps quickly will clog the frontside run lane, forcing the HB to bounce or cut back. This play struggles against inside blitzes and nano blitz packages that shoot a gap immediately, since the zone blocking cannot always adjust fast enough to seal a fast-flowing interior rusher. It beats base 4-3 and 3-4 fronts that stay in their gaps, along with light boxes created by man coverage on the trips side that pulls defenders away from the run fit. Post-snap, key the play side defensive tackle and any user-controlled defender flowing hard downhill, if he overpursues the frontside gap the cutback lane opens up for a big run.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap, if the defense has six or more defenders in the box this run is a tough matchup so consider hitting a quick game concept from this set instead.

Use the trips side receivers as run-off decoys, their vertical releases pull corners and safeties out of the tackle box, so a defense in man coverage often leaves fewer bodies to fit the run.

Manually control the HB after the handoff and trust your zone blocking, patience on the read step lets the double teams develop and opens up cutback lanes against inside linebacker overpursuit.
