Breakdown

Pitt X Drag out of Shotgun Trips HB Wk (10 personnel) sends the trips side into a switch release concept: the inside slot runs a deep vertical clear-out while the outside trips receiver sits down as a shallow crosser working underneath, dragging all the way across the formation, and the third trips receiver runs a short out to the flat. On the backside, the isolated X receiver runs a corner route off a speed cut, and the HB releases out of the backfield on a swing/flat route to the boundary. This is a full man beater and zone beater hybrid built around the drag creating natural rub traffic, with the primary read progression starting on the drag crossing underneath, then working to the backside corner route, and checking down to the HB flat route if both are covered.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check for a single high safety look, which usually signals man coverage and opens up the drag as the top priority read. Watch the flat defender on the trips side, since a slow or late reaction to the drag route means the switch release has created enough separation to throw with anticipation. Key the backside cornerback depth on the corner route, if he is playing off coverage the corner route window will be tight, but if he is pressed the throw should be there quickly. Post-snap, look for a user-controlled linebacker dropping into the drag lane or spying underneath, which signals the defense is aware of the drag concept and the checkdown to the HB flat route becomes more valuable. This play struggles against a hard-sitting Cover 3 sky or Tampa 2 shell where the middle linebacker or nickel drops directly into the drag window, so recognize that alignment pre-snap and consider audibling to a vertical shot instead.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing man or zone by checking the depth of the trips corners and whether a linebacker or safety is shaded over the slot.

If you see man coverage or a single high safety, target the drag route immediately since the switch release and rub concept from trips creates natural separation against man defenders.

Against zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4, let the drag sit down in the void behind the linebackers and in front of the deep zone defenders instead of forcing it through traffic.

Use the backside corner route as a hot route answer versus Cover 2 or 2 Man since it attacks the seam between the corner and safety before the drag fully develops.

Pair this play with Mesh Spot or Inside Cross from the same set to keep defenses guessing on shallow crossing concepts, then mix in Four Verticals or Pitt Z Streak to punish defenses that start sitting on the drag route.
