Post Slot Hitch is a trips-based passing concept out of Shotgun 10 personnel that isolates the backside single receiver on a post while the trips side runs a hitch from the slot with outside vertical or clear route support. It functions as a man beater first, using the post to attack off man leverage from safeties and the hitch to give a quick, high percentage answer against tight coverage or blitz looks. The primary read starts backside with the post if you get a favorable one on one matchup or single high shell, then progresses to the trips side slot hitch as the checkdown or rhythm throw against zone drops.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify the free safety alignment: if he is shaded toward the trips side, the backside post has a clean lane against man coverage. Watch the cornerback over the backside receiver for outside hip positioning, since inside leverage on that corner signals the post throw should be there immediately. Post-snap, key the flat defender or slot corner on the trips side, because if he sinks too deep on the post threat, the slot hitch will sit wide open underneath. This play struggles against Cover 3 with a hard flat drop or Cover 4 quarters coverage, since the extra deep defender takes away the post window and forces you into the hitch as a low value checkdown. Be wary of user linebackers spying the middle of the field or dropping into a lurk zone, as they can undercut the post route if the quarterback holds the ball too long in the pocket.

Usage Tips

Check the middle of the field pre-snap to identify one high versus two high shells, since the backside post only wins big against single high man or Cover 3 rotation. If you see two high safeties sitting deep, work the play to the trips side and lean on the slot hitch as your primary rhythm throw. Use hot routes to convert the backside outside receiver into a quick out or speed out if you diagnose Cover 2 flat defenders sitting underneath the post. This play excels on third and short to medium because the hitch sits down quickly and gives you a safe completion versus zone blitz pressure. Pair this with Trips Cross or Mtn Slot Cross from the same set so the defense has to respect both the deep post shot and the quick underneath game, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their zone drops.
