Breakdown

Pitt Flood Switch is a classic flood concept out of Shotgun Trips HB Wk that stacks three routes to one side of the field at different levels. The outer receiver runs a switch release into a corner route up top, the slot receiver crosses underneath into a deep out that flattens toward the sideline, and the inner most receiver settles into a shallow flat route, while the backside receiver runs an isolated vertical up the numbers. This is a Cover 3 beater by design, using the vertical stretch on the flood side to overload the deep third defender and the underneath zone defenders, with the primary read progressing from the deep corner route to the flat route as the quarterback works high to low.

Defensive Reads

Identify single high safety pre-snap, since that usually signals Cover 3 or Cover 1 and tells you the flood side will be manned by only one deep defender. Watch the flat defender and curl to flat zone defender post-snap, if they widen too fast to the out route the underneath flat route will be wide open. Beware of Cover 4 or Cover 2 shells with two deep safeties, since that takes away the deep corner route and forces you to check down early to the flat. Key on user controlled defenders lurking in the shallow zone, a smart user will sit on the flat route and bait the quarterback into a turnover. Look for blitz packages that send extra rushers off the edge, since the flood concept relies on quick timing throws and a collapsing pocket disrupts the high to low progression.

Usage Tips

Attack single high safety shells since the flood concept overloads one side of the field and forces the deep third defender to choose between the corner and the out route.

Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the strong safety alignment to confirm if the defense is rolling to Cover 3, then trust the high to low read from corner to flat.

Hot route the backside vertical into a deep comeback or dig if you are getting single coverage on that isolated receiver, it can become a solo shot play against man coverage.

Pair this play with Strong Flood or Deep Flood in your call sheet so the defense cannot sit on the same flood side reads snap after snap.

Best used on second and long or third and medium situations where the defense is more likely to sit in zone shells and give up the intermediate flat and out routes.
