61 X Choice runs out of Shotgun Trips HB Wk with the backside X receiver running an option (choice) route, breaking in or out based on the leverage of the defender covering him. To the trips side, the two outside receivers push vertical seam routes while the inner slot receiver runs an out breaking route toward the sideline, clearing underneath space for the choice route on the backside. This is a man beater at its core since the X receiver's choice route reads the defender's hip and cushion, but it also holds value against zone since the two verticals on the trips side stretch the deep defenders and open a throwing window underneath. The primary read progression starts with the X choice route against man coverage, then works to the trips side verticals if the backside is jumped or bracketed.

Defensive Reads

Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap, single high usually means man coverage on the X receiver, which is where the choice route thrives. Watch the cornerback's press technique on the X receiver, outside leverage invites an inside break, inside leverage invites an outside break, and the route adjusts accordingly. Key the flow of the middle linebacker after the snap, a fast drop to the choice route's landmark signals a defense sitting on the option route and should push you to the trips side verticals instead. Against zone coverage, look for the deep half safety rotating late, since the two vertical routes on the trips side are designed to hold him and open the underneath window. User controlled defenders sitting in a shallow lurk near the choice route's break point are the biggest threat, so double check the flat and hook zones before committing to the backside throw.

Usage Tips

Check the cornerback's alignment on the X receiver before the snap, if he is playing outside shade or hard press, hot route the choice route to break in, if he is playing inside shade, expect it to break out toward the sideline.

Use this play on third and short to medium situations where the choice route's built in option against man coverage gives you a high percentage completion.

If the defense shows two high safeties, lean toward the trips side verticals since the choice route loses some of its man beating advantage against zone drops.

Pair this play with Trips Cross or Inside Cross in the same personnel and formation to keep the defense guessing between a backside option route and a full field crossing concept.

Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if the middle linebacker sits shallow he can jump the choice route's inside break, so be ready to reset your throw to the vertical seams.
