HB Mid Draw out of Shotgun Trips HB Wk shows three receivers bunched to the trips side with a single receiver isolated backside, and the offensive line sells pass protection before opening a lane up the middle for the HB. The QB drops back briefly to simulate a pass play, drawing the defensive line and linebackers upfield before handing off to the HB who follows his blockers through the interior gap. This is a run play built to bait aggressive pass rushers and blitzing linebackers, with the primary read being the HB reading the center and guard double teams to find the crease.
Key the defensive line for slow, upfield pass rush momentum since that flow is exactly what the draw exploits. Watch middle linebacker depth and shuffle, if he sits and reads the mesh point instead of rushing, the draw lane collapses quickly. Man coverage on the trips side often pulls extra defenders away from the box, making this run hit harder against man beater shells. Zone coverage with deep safeties can still leave the intermediate run lane exposed if the linebackers drop too far into their zones. User the middle linebacker or a spy defender to sit on the draw and attack the mesh point before the HB gets vertical, this is the primary counter.
Call this on early downs or in second and long situations where the defense expects a pass based on the trips formation.
Watch for defenses stacking the box or bringing linebackers on delayed blitzes, since the draw action punishes overpursuit.
Use pre-snap motion sparingly here since the goal is to disguise the run look, keeping the trips alignment static often sells the pass better.
Pair this with Verticals or Four Verticals earlier in a drive so the defense respects the deep pass and bites harder on the draw fake.
Mix in HB Off Tackle or Inside Zone from the same set to keep linebackers guessing between gap and misdirection runs.
