Breakdown

Spacing out of Shotgun Trips HB Wk is a horizontal stretch concept built to attack zone coverage with quick, high percentage throws. The trips side runs a stack of hitches and a shallow out at varying depths (roughly 4, 5, and 6 yards) to sit underneath linebackers and flood one side of the field, while the backside single receiver typically runs an out or hitch as an isolated option. This is a zone beater designed to attack Cover 3 and Cover 4 by putting three defenders in conflict against three staggered horizontal targets, and the primary read progression starts with the shallowest trips route and works up the ladder based on the flow of the underside zone defenders.

Defensive Reads

Identify the coverage shell pre-snap by checking safety depth. Two deep safeties with a soft shell usually signals Cover 4 or Cover 2, which this play is built to punish with the staggered hitch and out stack. Watch the flat defender and curl to flat zone defender at the snap. If they sink too deep or widen late, the shortest hitch route will be open for an easy pitch and catch. Key the middle linebacker's zone drop. In Cover 3, a slow-footed linebacker dropping to the hook zone leaves a throwing lane to the intermediate hitch or out route. Beware user controlled lurk defenders sitting in the shallow zone, since a smart human defender can jump the lowest route and bait a pick six if the quarterback stares it down. This play struggles against man press coverage with underneath help, so if corners are lined up tight at the line with a robber safety showing, expect the routes to get walled off and consider hot routing to a man beater concept instead.

Usage Tips

Use this play on second or third and short to medium distance situations where a quick, safe completion keeps the offense ahead of schedule.

Read the middle linebacker and flat defender before the snap. If they show soft zone drops with depth, the low hitch and out combo will be open immediately after the catch.

Hot route the backside single receiver into a slant or drag if you diagnose man coverage, since the trips stack routes are designed for zone and lose value against tight man press.

Pair Spacing with Mesh Spot or Curls from this set to keep defenders guessing between quick horizontal stretches and intermediate crossing patterns, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their zone drops.

Use play action or Read Option earlier in a series to get linebackers to bite on run fits, then come back to Spacing to exploit the underneath voids left by aggressive zone defenders.
