Breakdown
RPO Peek Slant is an RPO out of Shotgun Spread Y-Flex Wk that pairs an inside zone run look with a two-man slant/vertical peek combo to the left side. The two receivers stacked to the left both break inward, one settling on a quick slant while the other stems up and outside on a vertical peek route, giving the quarterback a run/pass conflict read on the alley defender or slot corner. This is primarily a zone beater since the slant sits in the void created by the flowing linebackers, but it also punishes man coverage if the peek route wins vertically, with the primary read being the box count and second level defender flow before working slant to peek.
Defensive Reads
Watch the flow of the play side linebacker at the snap, if he steps up to fill the run gap the slant window opens immediately. Identify single high versus two high safety shells pre-snap, single high alignments tend to leave the slant area thinner in underneath zone. If the defense shows a nano blitz or fast inside pressure, the RPO read gets rushed, so be ready to throw hot or take the checkdown quickly. Man coverage on the two left receivers with no safety help over the top can be exposed by the peek route, look for the corner staying flat footed at the snap. Zone drops from linebackers that widen with the peek route will reopen the run lane, so respect the run fake even after the pass read is taken away.
Usage Tips
Check the box count pre-snap, if the defense has six or fewer in the box, take the give and let the inside zone do the work.
If a linebacker or slot defender crashes down on run flow, pull the ball and rifle the slant into the vacated window immediately.
Use the peek route as your answer against man coverage or when the flat defender jumps the slant, since it stresses the deep half.
Sequence this with RPO Zone Peek and RPO Read Bubble earlier in a series so the defense has to respect multiple conflict RPO looks off the same shotgun formation.
Best called on early downs or short yardage third downs where defenders are more likely to sell out against the run action.
