Read Option is a Shotgun run play out of Normal Y Off with 11 personnel that puts the QB in a true zone read look with the HB aligned next to him in the backfield. The diagram shows the QB and HB crossing paths behind the line, with the offensive line executing a zone blocking scheme to the play side while the QB reads the backside defensive end to decide whether to hand off or pull and keep it himself. This is a run play designed to attack gap discipline rather than a specific coverage shell, and the primary read progression starts and ends with the backside end: if he crashes down on the HB, the QB pulls and attacks the edge, if he sits or widens, the QB hands off for the zone run inside.
Pre-snap, identify the backside defensive end alignment and depth since he is the key defender in the entire concept. If the defense shows a wide 9-technique or a walked-up edge rusher, expect him to crash on the dive, which opens the keep lane for the QB. Watch for a spy or a linebacker sitting in the backside gap post-snap, since disciplined edge play or a scrape exchange technique will shut down the keeper option entirely. User-controlled defenders who key the mesh point and stay square can blow this play up by playing both the give and the keep simultaneously. Man coverage on the perimeter with no extra run support in the box is the most vulnerable shell against this concept since it leaves the edge defender isolated with no help.
Use Read Option on early downs when you want to force the defense to respect both the dive and the edge keeper before you start layering in RPOs from the same look. Pre-snap, check the box count and identify if the defense has an extra hat rotated down, since a light box favors the give while a stacked box favors pulling the ball. If the CPU or user defender crashes hard on the HB every snap, start pulling the ball consistently to gash the edge for explosive gains. Pair this with Inside Zone and RPO Zone Peek out of the same Normal Y Off set so the defense cannot key on formation tendencies. In competitive play against aggressive user defenders who fly downhill on the HB fake, keep the ball more often since Madden AI leverage on the backside end is easier to manipulate than a disciplined human spy.
