Breakdown

Mid Zone is an inside zone running play out of Shotgun 11 personnel that hands the ball to the HB and lets him press the middle of the formation before reading his blocks. The offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme, sliding as a unit and double teaming the play side down linemen before working to the second level linebackers, while the TE stays in as an extra blocker on the play side edge. The primary read progression for the HB is a backside cutback lane first, then bend it to the play side B gap if the backside is clogged, using his blockers as the true read rather than a static gap. This is a straightforward run play with no play-action or RPO attachment, designed to gash light boxes and defenses that overcommit to outside zone or gap runs.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap, count the box defenders and check linebacker depth, stacked linebackers sitting tight to the line signal an aggressive run fit that you can counter with cutback vision. Watch safety alignment, a single high safety often means the defense is playing base run support and leaves the cutback lane vulnerable if the play side is sealed. Post snap, identify if the defensive line is slanting hard to one gap, zone blocking schemes are naturally suited to cut back against overaggressive line slants. User controlled defenders flowing hard to string the play outside are a key indicator to cut it up inside immediately rather than trying to bounce it wider. This play struggles against gap exchange stunts and disciplined linebackers who stay square and read their keys, if you see linebackers hanging back and reading mesh, expect the cutback lane to be taken away and consider switching to Same Side Zone or HB Counter to attack a different angle.

Usage Tips

Use Mid Zone on early downs, especially first and second and short to medium, to keep the defense honest and set up your play-action shots later in the drive.

Check the box count before the snap, if the defense has six or fewer defenders in the box this is a green light run against most base fronts.

Motion the TE or use pre-snap shifts sparingly since this set has RPO Peek Slant and RPO Zone Peek that share the same run action, keep your run and RPO tempo consistent so defenses cannot key on formation tells.

If you see a heavy blitz look with linebackers crashing downhill immediately post snap, be ready to bounce the run outside rather than forcing it into the mesh point.

Pair Mid Zone with Same Side Zone and HB Counter in the same drive to attack different gaps with similar formation and personnel, forcing the defense to respect multiple run fits before you dial up PA Zone Cross or Zone Fake Jet off the same look.
