Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check corner depth and hips on the scissors side, a corner playing tight outside leverage in man coverage is vulnerable to the natural pick created by the crossing routes. Look for two-high safety shells indicating Cover 2 or Cover 4, both of which struggle with the rub since the underneath defender has to fight through traffic to cover the corner route. Post-snap, key the flat defender or slot corner, if he trails the post receiver instead of sitting on the corner route, the corner is open immediately in the end zone. Watch for a user-controlled defender lurking in the shallow zone near the RB drag, a disciplined user can jump that route and bait a checkdown throw. Man coverage with a single high safety is the biggest red flag against this play since there is no help over the top once the corner route clears the rub.

Usage Tips

Use this near the goal line or inside the opponent 15 where the shrunken field magnifies the rub created by the scissors concept.

Pre-snap, identify if the corner is in man or off zone on the scissors side, tight man alignment with no safety help over the top is your green light to hit the corner route early.

If you see two deep safeties in a split shell, work the backside dig since Cover 2 and Cover 4 rules pull underneath defenders away from that route.

Hot route the RB drag into a flat route against zone coverage to give yourself a faster underneath outlet if the scissors is jumped.

Pair this call with Double Slants or Slants earlier in a series so the defense respects quick underneath throws, then hit the corner route for a chunk gain or score when they sit low.
