Breakdown

HB Counter out of Shotgun Normal Y Off is a power run play that pulls the backside guard and tackle (or fullback/TE depending on personnel) to lead the HB through a designed counter path, creating misdirection against flowing linebackers. The line blocks down while the pullers kick out the edge defender and lead through the hole, so the primary read is patience: let the counter action develop, press the initial hole to freeze the defense, then cut off the puller's block based on how the edge defender and force player react. This is a base run concept, not a play-action or RPO, and it wins by exploiting overaggressive linebacker flow and gap discipline breakdowns.

Defensive Reads

Watch for linebacker depth and flow speed pre-snap; stacked, shallow linebackers who diagnose fast can beat counter with quick backside pursuit. Identify if the defense is in a 3-4 or 4-3 front with a true edge setter, since a disciplined edge defender who stays home and squeezes the puller kills this play at the point of attack. Look for user-controlled defenders spying the backfield or lurking in the counter lane, as smart users will sit on the pulling guard's path and blow up the timing. Check safety alignment; if a safety is stacked in the box or rotates down fast into the counter side, the cutback lane disappears and you should bail to a cut opposite the flow. Man coverage with blitz packages (like a Cover 0 all out blitz) can be deadly against counter if the extra rusher is unblocked and gets into the backfield before the pullers set the edge, so respect fast pressure looks and consider a hot route protection check or audible instead.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) when you have established inside zone to sell the counter misdirection off similar line movement. Check the box count pre-snap; if the defense has 6 or fewer in the box you have a numbers advantage to hit this downhill. Use motion or a quick pre-snap shift to bait linebackers into flowing hard one direction before the snap, since counter punishes fast flow and overpursuit. Pair this with Inside Zone and Read Option from the same set so defenders cannot key run direction based on formation tendencies. If you see a fast flowing 4-3 Under or aggressive Mike linebacker crashing downhill on tendency, counter will gash them, but hold off if the defense shows a heavy blitz look with unblocked defenders in the counter path since the extra hitter can blow it up before the pullers arrive.
