The backside X runs a vertical clear route up the numbers, the slot receiver works an option route off the line that can settle, sit down, or break outward based on the leverage of the underneath defender, and the outside receiver to that side stems vertically before breaking back to the corner as a boundary threat. The HB stays in as a check release blocker on the vertical stem, giving the quarterback a built in outlet if the option read gets covered up. This is a man beater at its core, since the option route is designed to create separation using the defender's own leverage, but it can also pick apart soft zone drops if the underneath defender sits too far off the slot.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap, identify if the defense is showing man coverage with tight press alignment on the outside receivers, this play is designed to exploit exactly that look through the option route. Watch the slot defender's depth and leverage at the snap, a defender playing too aggressively upfield gets beaten instantly by the option route settling behind him. Post snap, track any user controlled defender flowing to the option route area, if he commits hard the quarterback should look immediately to the corner break or the vertical clear route. Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells with disciplined zone drops from linebackers can shut this down if the underneath defender sits directly on the option route's landmark. Watch for a robber or lurking safety sitting in the middle of the field, since that defender can jump the option route if the quarterback stares it down too long.

Usage Tips

Read the slot defender's leverage before the snap, if he is playing inside shade the option route breaks outside and if he is playing outside shade it settles in or breaks across the middle for an easy pitch and catch.

Use this on second and medium or third and short since the option route gives the quarterback a high percentage completion against almost any coverage shell.

Check the HB release, if the defense brings a blitz off the edge, hot route the HB to release quickly into the flat as a checkdown instead of holding him in to chip.

Pair this with Curl Flats or RPO Peek Slant from the same set so defenders keying the option route get punished by a play that looks identical out of the same personnel and alignment.

Against zone heavy defenses, look to the corner break route on the boundary since it can find soft spots between the deep and underneath zone defenders.
