Zone Fake Jet is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Normal Y Off (11 personnel) that sells a jet sweep fake before the QB works a boot/roll concept to the right side. The offensive line slides protection to the right, and the diagram shows a single route to the flat with the TE releasing on a short in breaking route from the backside, giving the QB a quick high-low read to the field. The fake jet motion holds linebackers and the flat defender for a beat, making this a zone beater designed to punish squeeze-and-sink linebacker flow with a fast-developing horizontal stretch. Primary read is the flat route first, then work back to the TE's in cut if the flat is capped.
Pre snap, check if the strong safety and corner to the play side are shaded to respect the jet sweep, since that alignment often signals a run blitz or contain look that leaves the flat wide open. Identify Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone shells before the snap, since squeezed flat defenders and deep sinking corners are the shells this play is built to exploit. Post snap, key the flat defender's first step: if he crashes on the jet fake, the flat route is uncontested for an easy completion. Watch for a user controlled linebacker spying the boot side, since a disciplined lurk defender sitting on the TE's in breaking route can jump the second read and bait a turnover. Man coverage with inside leverage on the TE combined with a hard edge contain defender who ignores the jet fake and stays home is the fastest way to blow up this concept.
Use pre-snap motion across the formation to bait linebackers into stepping toward the jet action before the throw develops.
This play shines on early downs (first and second and short) when defenses are more likely to sit in run-action zone shells expecting inside zone or the jet sweep.
If the cornerback follows the jet motion man to man, hot route the flat route into a corner or wheel to attack the vacated space behind him.
Pair this call with Inside Zone and PA Jet Sweep earlier in a drive so the defense over commits to the run fake, making the play action rollout hit even harder.
Watch the flat defender post snap: if he sinks with the TE's in route, throw the flat immediately before the boot side safety can drive downhill.
