RPO Zone Peek is a true run pass option out of Shotgun 11 personnel that pairs an inside zone run scheme with a quick peek route, usually a bubble or slot flat concept, that the QB reads pre-snap and immediately post-snap based on the numbers or leverage of the alert defender. The blocking scheme is inside zone with the offensive line covering down and reading the flow of the linebackers, while the QB keys the alert defender (often a slot corner, overhang, or linebacker) to decide whether to pull and throw the peek or hand off the zone run. This is both a run beater and a light box beater, giving you a built in answer to overaggressive run fits without ever having to check the play at the line.

Defensive Reads

Watch the slot corner or overhang defender pre-snap, if he is sitting flat footed inside the box he is vulnerable to the peek throw Check safety depth, a single high safety often means the alert defender is more committed to run support, which favors the RPO throw Against man coverage with the corner playing tight technique on the peek receiver, expect the offense to take the handoff since the throw window shrinks Zone shells with linebackers reading run flow first will get gashed if they crash downhill too quickly, so disciplined linebackers who stay square kill this play User controlled defenders sprinting to jump the peek route right at the snap can bait the QB into a bad decision, but if the defense oversells that jump the inside zone lane opens up big

Usage Tips

Identify the alert defender before the snap, usually the slot corner or overhang defender aligned over your peek receiver, since his leverage and depth dictate whether you pull or hand off

If that defender is sitting inside or crashing hard on run action, throw the peek immediately for a free easy completion before the defense can rally

If the box count is light and the alert defender is playing off or outside leverage, take the automatic handoff and let your zone blocking work

Use this play on early downs in run heavy personnel to keep defenses honest, then sequence into Inside Zone or Same Side Zone on the next snap so linebackers cannot key the RPO tag

Pair this call with RPO Peek Slant later in a series so the defense has to respect both the bubble style peek and a slant peek tag from the same run action, forcing user linebackers to hesitate
