Y Shallow Cross out of Shotgun Normal Y Off lines up with a deep dig or post breaking outside from the backside receiver, a shallow crosser working underneath from the Y tag all the way across the formation, an intermediate square in route sitting behind the shallow, and a backside receiver running a quick out to the flat. The backside receiver on the far right also runs a simple out breaking route to occupy that side of the field. This is a classic man beater built around the shallow cross clearing underneath linebackers and creating natural rub traffic, while the square in route sits down as the zone beater answer against off coverage. The primary read starts with the shallow crosser working left to right, then progresses to the square in behind it if the shallow is taken away, with the deep dig as the home run alert against single high looks.

Defensive Reads

Watch for user controlled linebackers sitting in the shallow crosser lane, they will try to jump the route early so be ready to reset to the square in sitting behind it. Identify single high safety looks before the snap, that tells you the deep dig has a soft spot to work into against man coverage. If the defense shows a hard flat blitz or nano blitz off the edge, get rid of the ball to the shallow cross immediately since it is the fastest developing route in the concept. Cover 3 zone drops with a sitting middle linebacker will clog the shallow cross window, so be ready to work the square in route or the backside out as your zone beater answer. Watch cornerback press alignment on the backside out route, hard press man there signals the defense wants to take away the quick flat answer, which means the shallow cross becomes your primary answer.

Usage Tips

Use this against man coverage first since the shallow crosser creates natural traffic and rub potential against man defenders trailing across the field.

Check the safety alignment pre snap, if you see two high shells the square in route sitting behind the shallow becomes your quick answer against soft zone drops.

Hot route the backside out route into a deeper comeback if you are facing a defense that keys the flat aggressively on early downs.

This play works best on second and medium to third and short since the shallow cross develops fast and gets the ball out before pressure arrives.

Pair this with Curl Flats or Slant Flat from the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick underneath concepts and the deeper crossing action, forcing linebackers to widen their drops.
