RPO Read FL Screen is a run pass option built off inside zone action, giving the QB a pre and post snap decision between handing off and a bubble style screen to the flanker. The offensive line sells run blocking on the zone action while the flanker runs a quick screen route with a receiver working outside to set up as a lead blocker, and the backside X receiver runs a vertical release to hold the deep defender. This is a zone beater at its core, punishing linebackers who crash down on the run action or sit flat footed in their zone drops, and the primary read progression is run first, then flanker screen if the alpha defender (usually a flowing linebacker or overhang defender) widens or bites on the run fake.
Pre-snap, check linebacker depth and alignment, stacked or shallow linebackers who crash hard on zone reads are the exact defenders this play is designed to exploit. Watch the flat defender and overhang corner or slot defender on the screen side, if they sit inside or bite on run action, the flanker screen has a clean lane to the boundary. Post-snap, key any user controlled defender flying downhill toward the mesh point, that is the trigger for the QB to pull and throw the quick screen. Zone coverages with linebackers reading run first are most vulnerable, while disciplined defenses that keep flat defenders squeezed and maintain outside contain shut this down. Man coverage and blitzes that bring extra defenders off the edge without honoring the screen can blow this play up if the perimeter blocker cannot get outside in time, so respect five or more man pressure looks pre-snap.
Pre-snap, identify the numbers advantage to the flanker side, if the defense is outnumbered in the box or has a corner playing off with no immediate flat defender, favor pulling the ball for the screen. Use this on early downs in normal run down and distance to keep the defense honest, since the run action looks identical to your base inside zone runs in this set. If the defense shows a hard crash or edge blitz off the screen side, hot route the flanker screen blocker to adjust his aiming point or just take the automatic handoff since the crash opens up the run lane. Pair this play with Same Side Zone and Inside Zone earlier in a series so the defense keys run action, then come back to this RPO to punish overaggressive linebacker flow. Against man coverage look elsewhere, since this concept is designed to attack zone shells and undisciplined linebacker eyes rather than beat true man leverage.
