Breakdown

Fake Jet HB Seam is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Normal Y Off that uses jet motion across the backfield to sell the sweep before the QB pulls it back to throw. Off the fake, the play sends one receiver on a deep seam up the middle of the field, a second receiver on a deep comeback breaking back toward the sideline, and the third stretches vertically down the numbers, while the running back releases into a quick flat route as a checkdown outlet. The primary read starts with the seam route attacking the middle of the field, then works to the comeback if the safety jumps the seam, with the flat route as the built in answer against pressure or blitz looks.

Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth and flow at the snap, if they bite hard on the jet fake and run toward the sideline, the seam route will have a clean throwing lane through the middle. Key the safety over the seam route, if he stays deep and centered instead of widening, that shows zone coverage and you should climb the ladder to the comeback route on the opposite side. Look for a user controlled defender sitting in a shallow lurk or spy position near the seam, that is the biggest threat to jump the throw so double clutch or move to the comeback if you see him sitting. Man coverage with linebackers turning their back to run with receivers on the seam or comeback is where this play hits hardest since the play fake creates natural separation. Heavy pressure or a nano blitz off the edge is the counter to this play, since the fake eats up time in the pocket, so the flat route to the running back becomes essential against aggressive blitz packages.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs like first or second and short to mid distance so the jet motion play fake actually holds linebackers and safeties for a beat. Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two high safeties cheating toward the seam side, be ready to reset your read to the comeback route instead of forcing the seam. Motion pre-snap to see if the defense shifts or shows man by following the jet man across, that tells you whether to expect a man beater seam window or a zone beater comeback window. If the defense brings extra pressure off the edge, hot route the flat route to sit down quicker or check it down immediately to the running back rather than holding for the deeper routes. Pair this with Zone Fake Jet or PA Jet Sweep earlier in a series so the defense starts respecting the jet action, then hit them with the seam shot once linebackers start flowing hard on the fake.
