Breakdown

Midline Read Option out of Shotgun Normal Y Off is a zone read run play built off the midline scheme, with the QB reading a crashing defensive end to decide between keeping it himself or handing off to the HB. The diagram shows the offensive line blocking down on a midline zone track while the HB takes an inside track path and the QB fakes the mesh point before either pulling and bouncing outside or feeding the ball on the give read. There is no route concept shown here since this is a straight run play, and the primary read progression starts with the QB keying the read defender's crash angle to determine give or keep.

Defensive Reads

Watch the play side defensive end pre-snap and at the snap, since his crash angle dictates the entire keep or give decision for the QB. Identify if the defense is running a scrape exchange, where the DE crashes down and a linebacker replaces him on the edge, since this negates the read advantage. Check the depth and alignment of the middle linebacker, since a downhill fast-flowing MLB can close the midline running lane before the back gets through. Look for user-controlled defenders spying the QB, since a disciplined spy can eliminate the keep option and force every read to the HB. Against stacked eight-man fronts or heavy blitz packages, this run becomes low value, so check the box count before committing to the call.

Usage Tips

Use this against defenses that show light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box, since the midline concept relies on winning numbers up front.

Key the play side defensive end pre-snap and confirm he is not a scrape exchange linebacker disguised as the read man, since a disciplined scrape exchange can blow this play up.

Pair this with Inside Zone and HB Counter in the same set to keep defenders honest on their run fits, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their gap reads.

Run this on early downs (first or second and short to medium yardage) when you want to control tempo and stay ahead of the sticks without exposing the QB to unnecessary contact.

If the defense starts selling out on the run with stacked fronts, counter with RPO Peek Slant or RPO Zone Peek from the same formation to punish overaggressive linebackers.
