Defensive Reads

Watch the play side defensive end or outside linebacker at the snap since this is the exact defender the QB read is designed to attack. This run beats light fronts and aggressive man coverage looks where the defense commits extra bodies to stopping the pass instead of the box. Stacked fronts with a spy or a disciplined edge defender who stays home on the QB will shut this down and force a tougher handoff read. Post snap, look for linebackers flowing hard to the play side gap, if they overcommit the backside cutback lane opens up for the HB. Be wary of a user controlled defender spying the QB, since that removes the option advantage and turns this into a straight give read every time.

Usage Tips

Key the defensive end or edge defender pre-snap to decide who your QB should be reading before the ball is even snapped.

Use this against light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box since the read option adds an extra gap threat the defense has to account for.

Run this on early downs like first and second and ten to keep the defense honest and set up explosive play action shots later in the drive.
