Up front the offensive line stays in run blocking assignments to sell the handoff, while the outside receiver runs a short hitch/comeback breaking back toward the QB and the inside slot receiver releases outside to set up as the screen blocker on the alert screen. The QB's primary progression is to read the box count and second level defenders first, and if the numbers favor throwing, he snaps his eyes to the alert screen route breaking back outside for a quick, high percentage completion.

Defensive Reads

Watch the play side cornerback's alignment before the snap, since a soft or off corner signals the alert screen will have room to work. Key the linebackers' first step after the snap, if they crash hard toward the run fit they cannot get back outside in time to stop the screen. This concept beats aggressive fronts and blitz heavy defenses that overcommit to stopping the run action. Zone shells with a flowing linebacker or a user controlled defender sitting outside can jump the screen route and blow it up for a loss. Man coverage with a press corner who stays home and squats on the boundary receiver is the best way to shut down the alert screen read.

Usage Tips

Check the box count pre snap and count defenders inside the tackles to decide whether the run or the screen is the better numbers advantage.

If the defense shows a heavy run blitz with linebackers crashing downhill, pull the ball immediately and go to the alert screen for an easy pickup outside.

Use this play on early downs in run heavy personnel packages to keep the defense honest and force linebackers to respect both the run fit and the perimeter screen.

Pair this call with Read Option and RPO Peek Slant from the same set so the defense cannot key on run blocking versus RPO action.

Avoid throwing the screen into press man coverage from the alert side cornerback since he can jump the route before the blocker gets set.
