Breakdown

Shuffle Strong Flood is a flood concept out of Shotgun 11 personnel that stacks three receivers into the same vertical stretch to overload one side of the field. The route combo layers a deep corner or go route, an intermediate out or comeback, and a shallow flat route underneath, creating a high low read against zone coverage while also giving you a rhythm throw against man. Primary progression starts with the deep flood route to see if the corner gets beat over the top, then works down to the intermediate breaking route, and settles on the flat as the checkdown against a hard squeeze or blitz look.

Defensive Reads

Read the flat defender first, if he sinks or bails with the flood side receiver you have a soft spot underneath for the intermediate route. Watch the deep safety alignment pre-snap, single high shells like Cover 1 or Cover 3 leave the deep corner route on an island against the corner if the corner does not get depth quickly. Key the strong side linebacker or nickel, if he blitzes off the edge or shows a nano blitz look your outlet is the flat route since it clears out fast. Against Cover 4 quarters watch for the outside corner sinking into the flood, that leaves the intermediate route as the primary answer instead of the deep shot. This play struggles against user controlled lurk defenders sitting in the flood zone, if the user jumps the intermediate route immediately climb the ladder to the deep corner route or check down late to the flat.

Usage Tips

Use this on third and medium to third and long when you need a defined progression against zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4 quarters. Check the flood side pre-snap by looking at the safety rotation, if the deep safety rotates away from your flood you have a clean shot at the corner route. Motion or shift to confirm zone versus man before the snap, if the defense stays static in shotgun expect man coverage and you can hot route the flat man to a slant or option route for a quicker man beater. Pair this with Curl Flats or Curls Lead Swing to keep the defense honest on the same flood side, then hit them with Shuffle Strong Flood once they start jumping the shorter routes. Against Cover 2 look immediately to the intermediate breaking route in the seam between the corner and safety before the flat defender can widen. Use play action rollout style plays like PA Same Side Boot later in the drive to sell the same flood look and freeze linebackers.
