The receiver on the right runs a deep corner from the slot alignment while his outside counterpart hooks underneath to the flat, and the left side mirrors this with a corner route stacked over a shorter out breaking route. This is a man beater concept designed to attack cornerbacks playing outside leverage, with the primary read progression starting to the deep corner (right side) since it stretches the sideline vertically, then working down to the underneath crosser if the corner route is capped by a safety.

Defensive Reads

Watch the cornerback alignment before the snap, since tight press corners struggle to stay on top of the corner routes once the receiver stacks vertically off the release. Key the safety rotation immediately after the snap, since a two high shell that rotates down to one side signals Cover 2 or Cover 4 match, which caps the corner route on that side and forces you to work the underneath crosser instead. Look for user controlled defenders sitting in the deep half or quarter, since a lurking safety over the top of the corner route is the biggest threat to this concept and will bait a pick six if the quarterback stares it down. Identify blitz packages pre-snap by checking linebacker depth, since a nano blitz or overload pressure package can beat this play before the corner routes have time to develop, especially against max protect issues in Shotgun. Cover 3 zone drops with a hard flat defender sitting on the underneath crossing route will clog the shallow read, so recognize when the flat defender is sinking rather than widening and adjust your progression to the opposite side corner route.

Usage Tips

Take a pre-snap look at the safety alignment before the snap, since two high shells force you to peek the underneath crossers first while single high shells open up the deep corner routes immediately.

Use your hot route menu to check the underneath receiver into a hitch or slide route if you are getting a hard press look, since this gives you a quick answer against man coverage without needing the corner to clear.

This play excels on second and long or third and medium situations where defenses often sit in zone or match coverage looking to prevent explosive plays over the middle.

Pair Corner Strike with Slants or Double Slants from the same formation to keep the defense honest, since the quick game route combos punish underneath sitting linebackers if defenses start jumping the corner routes after seeing this play on tape.

Combine this call with Four Verticals in your play sequencing to condition safeties into staying deep, then dial back to Corner Strike so the underneath crosser stays open against cheating zone defenders.
