Mtn PA Read is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Normal Y Off with 11 personnel that uses a mountain (stacked) release on the left side to disguise the route concept. Off the play fake, the outside receiver in the mountain stack runs a deep corner or flag route while the inside stack receiver runs a crossing dig that sits over the middle, and the backside single receiver runs an out and up (sluggo) to stress the corner vertically. The RB fakes the mesh point and leaks into a shallow flat check down. Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth immediately after the snap, if they bite hard on the play fake the dig route will come open quickly behind them for an easy intermediate completion. Key the flat defender or curl to flat zone defender, if he sinks with the dig route the underneath check down to the RB becomes the fastest outlet. Identify press man coverage on the outside corner pre-snap, since the corner route on the mountain stack is designed to win against tight man coverage with a clean vertical stem. Beware of a user controlled safety sitting in a deep half or robber technique, as this play struggles against a disciplined two high shell that keeps a defender over the top of the corner route while a linebacker spies the dig. Look for delayed or disguised blitzes off the edge, since the play action mesh point can be exploited by a fast contain rusher if the offensive line is selling run blocking too aggressively.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs like first or second and short to mid distance so the play fake actually holds linebackers and freezes the second level defenders.

Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two high safeties sitting deep the dig route sitting in the middle of the field will be your primary read since the corner route will be capped.

If the defense shows a single high safety look, prioritize the corner route on the mountain side since it should win one on one against man coverage or hole shot a zone rotation.

Hot route the RB to a wider release or a stick route if you are facing a heavy blitz look, this gives the quarterback a faster outlet against pressure without needing to hold the ball through a full read progression.

Pair this play with Mtn HB Swing and Mtn Curls in your play calling sequence, since all three share the same mountain motion and stack look pre-snap, making it hard for defenders to key run versus pass based on formation alone.
