Breakdown

Mtn Y Lead Read Option is a shotgun read option run play out of 11 personnel with pre-snap motion into a bunch-style alignment near the backfield. The diagram shows the offensive line executing a zone blocking scheme to the play side while the TE motions across to act as a lead blocker through the hole, giving the QB a true give or keep read on the play side end. This is a run-first play design, not a pass concept, with the primary read being the backside defensive end: crash inside on the RB and the QB pulls it, stay wide and the QB hands it off behind the Y lead block.

Defensive Reads

Watch the play side defensive end pre-snap and post-snap since he is the primary read key for the QB and the player you must control to force a bad decision. Base 4-3 or 4-2-5 fronts with disciplined edge players who stay home on the QB give this play trouble because it eliminates the keep option. Man coverage that follows the TE motion can leave the lead block soft, so user the play side linebacker to fill downhill against the lead blocker. Overloaded blitz packages sent from the play side often win quickly against the zone scheme, so check protection or bail to a quick pass if you see extra rushers stacked to the run side. Aggressive safety rotation down into the box pre-snap signals an opportunity to fake this look and go to a play-action shot instead.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is playing man or zone based on whether a defender follows the TE across the formation.

This play hits hardest on early downs (1st and 2nd and short to medium) when defenses are not selling out to stop the pass.

If the defense shows a heavy box with the safety creeping down, consider audibling to a play-action shot like Mtn PA Read or Mtn PA Verticals to punish overaggressive run fits.

Pair this play with RPO Peek Slant or RPO Zone Peek in your play-calling sequence so the defense has to respect both the perimeter run and the quick game off similar formation looks.

Trust the read on the play side end rather than predetermining give or keep, and use manual QB control if needed to slide the mesh point away from a hard crash.
