Defensive Reads

Watch the cornerback over the motion receiver pre-snap, if he stays put instead of shifting with motion, expect zone coverage underneath. Post-snap, key the flat defender's reaction to the switch release, if he bites on the shallow out, the vertical seam route will be open behind him. This concept beats man coverage well because the switch release creates natural confusion on defender assignments at the line. Zone defenses with a hard flat drop can undercut the underneath out route, so be ready to climb to the vertical route instead. Watch for user linebackers sitting on the shallow crossing route, as a well timed jump can bait dangerous interceptions if the quarterback locks on too quickly.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone coverage based on whether the defense follows the motion man across the formation.

If the cornerback follows the switch release and stays outside, throw the underneath out route on the crossing route before the defender can recover his zone or man leverage.

This play works best on second and medium or third and short since the underneath out route sits down quickly for a safe completion.

Pair this play with Shuffle Z Short Cross or Curl Flats from the same set to keep defenses guessing between switch releases and traditional route combos.

Against zone shells, hot route the backside out route into a deeper comeback to attack the void behind underneath zone defenders sitting at the sticks.
