Slants out of Pistol Doubles Y Off is a quick-hitting man beater built on three-step timing throws. Both outside receivers run slants breaking hard to the inside, while the two inside receivers (the Y and slot) run quick outs to the flat to clear space and hold underneath defenders. The read progression starts with the left slant (drawn in red as the primary), then works to the right slant if the boundary is jumped, giving the QB a full-field high-low slant read against man coverage or blitz looks.
Pre-snap, identify if the corners are in press man or bail technique, since tight man coverage with no safety help over the top is the biggest weakness this play exploits. Watch the flow of the linebackers at the snap, if they sink into passing lanes or show a robber technique, the inside slant windows will close quickly. Key the strong safety rotation, if he rotates down into the box pre-snap it usually signals man coverage or a blitz, both of which favor the slants. User a defender to sit in the shallow crossing lane and jump the primary slant read, this is the single biggest way to bait the QB into a turnover on this concept. Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with disciplined linebackers sitting underneath tend to shut this play down since the slants have no vertical stem to stretch the zone defenders.
Get the ball out on time within a three-step drop, this play lives and dies on rhythm throws before the pocket collapses.
Check pre-snap for man coverage indicators like tight press alignment on the outside receivers, since slants shred man beaters that lack inside help.
Use the out routes from the inside receivers as hot route options against zone drops if the slants get jumped by an underneath defender.
Pair this with Four Verticals or PA Cross from the same set to keep the defense honest, since Slants punishes teams sitting on shorter routes after seeing verticals earlier in the sequence.
Best called on 3rd and short to medium, or as a answer to a Cover 0 or man blitz look where the underneath defenders have no zone help.
