Defensive Reads

Watch for a robber or lurking linebacker sitting in the middle of the field, since he can jump the post route if the play action fake does not hold him. Cover 3 with a deep middle defender is dangerous for the offense because that single deep player can rotate over and undercut the post before it reaches its landing spot. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge are usually fine here because the play action slows the pass rush, but interior pressure with no play side back to help can force the quarterback off his post read early. If the safety bites down hard on the run fake pre snap or immediately after the snap, that is the key to trust the post throw, but if he stays deep and reads through the mesh point, check down to the seam or throw it away.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage when defenses expect run out of Pistol personnel.

Check the safety alignment before the snap. If you see two high safeties rotate down or a single high safety cheating toward the box, this is your green light to fire the shot.

Hot route the vertical seam route on the left into a deep out or comeback against zone shells that sit soft over the top, since the post and dig routes already stress the deep middle.

Pair this play with HB Dive or Y Lead Read Option earlier in a series to get defenders keying run fakes so the play action freezes linebackers and opens throwing lanes.

Sell the run fake fully with the quarterback animation before looking to the post, since defenses that diagnose pass immediately can rally to the crossing routes and take away the explosive gain.
