There are no route concepts shown since this is a pure run play, and the primary read is simply the first open crease at the point of attack, reading the down linemen and B gap fill from the linebackers.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify the mike linebacker depth and box count, a stacked box of seven or more defenders signals the defense is sitting on the dive. Watch for a shaded three technique or nose tackle crashing hard down the line, this can blow up the play design before the back reaches the line of scrimmage. Post-snap, key the linebacker fill speed, if they diagnose quickly and scrape over the top the cutback lane disappears and the play is stuffed for minimal gain. User-controlled defenders spying the mesh point or crashing the A gap on delay are the biggest threat to this play, sim gap discipline usually gets exposed by patience while user aggression at the mesh kills it. This play struggles against odd front stacks with two gapping linebackers, but it beats light boxes and defenses that widen out for perimeter run fits from your other calls in the set.
Usage Tips
Use HB Dive as a tempo-control play on early downs to keep defenses honest against your pass-heavy Doubles Y Off concepts like Four Verticals and PA Deep In.
Check the box count pre-snap. If the defense has six or more defenders in the box, consider audibling to a perimeter run like HB Stretch Alert Bubble instead.
Snap the ball quickly after the mesh point since HB Dive hits fast, this limits the defense's ability to diagnose and fill gaps with user-controlled linebackers.
Pair this play with Read Option and Gt Read Option from the same set to keep second level defenders honest on mesh reads and freeze linebackers with similar backfield action.
Best called on short yardage or first and ten situations against base personnel, avoid calling it against heavy nickel or dime looks with light boxes since the gap integrity is harder to win.
