Zone Fake Jet is a play-action pass out of Pistol Doubles Y Off that sells jet motion and inside zone before the QB works a single deep route to the boundary. The diagram shows the receiver working a shallow drag underneath from the backside before turning it upfield into a wheel-style breakout route past the second level, while the rest of the protection stays home to sell run action off the fake jet sweep. This is a play-action shot play designed to freeze linebackers and safeties with the run fake, with the primary read being that one breaking route as it clears the traffic near the line and stretches vertically up the sideline.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is stacking the box expecting run, since that is exactly the look this play is designed to exploit with the fake jet action. Watch linebacker depth and flow, if they bite hard on the run fake and flow toward the line, the breakout route behind them will be wide open. Post-snap, key any user-controlled defender dropping into a lurk position near the route's breakpoint, as that is the biggest threat to this concept. This play struggles against teams that stay disciplined with their linebackers in zone drops and do not overcommit to the run fake. Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with disciplined underneath zone defenders will squeeze the window, so be ready to reset the play with a different call if the linebackers are not biting.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs like first or second and short to mid distance when defenses are keyed on stopping the run out of Pistol personnel.
Check the safety depth before the snap, if you see a single high safety or run blitz alignment the play fake will hold defenders longer and open up the breakout route.
Hot route the underneath receiver to a quicker option if you see zone drop defenders sitting on the route, since the deep break can take time to develop.
Sequence this play after running HB Zone or Read Option from the same set so linebackers start biting on the run fake, making the play-action window bigger later in the series.
