The primary read progression is backside to frontside: identify the first double team or combo block, then work through the playside gaps to find the crease as the line covers down on the front.

Defensive Reads

Key the frontside linebacker flow, if they overpursue with the zone action, cut back against the grain for a big gain. Watch the defensive line's gap integrity, a controlled defensive tackle who stays home can clog the initial cutback lane and force you playside early. Identify whether the defense is in a base 4-3 or 3-4 front, heavier fronts with extra linebackers at depth can fill gaps faster and shut down the inside run before it develops. Look for a user-controlled linebacker sitting in the hole or spying the mesh point, this is the biggest threat to blow up Zone Split before the back reaches the line of scrimmage. Check safety depth post-snap, if both safeties stay deep in a two high shell, the box is lighter and this run has more room to hit versus a single high look with an extra run defender crashing down.

Usage Tips

Use Zone Split on early downs, especially first and second and short to medium yardage, to stay ahead of the sticks and keep the defense honest. Check the box count pre-snap, if the defense has six or fewer in the box, this is a green light run with numbers in your favor. Watch for safety rotation down into the alley before the snap, if a safety cheats down you may want to check to a play like HB Zone or HB Dive instead to attack a different gap. Pair this with Jet Touch Pass or Zone Fake Jet from the same set to keep defenders honest against outside motion while still threatening the interior gaps. Mix in Counter Read Option or Gt Read Option on the following snap so linebackers cannot sit on the same zone flow reads and get baited into misdirection.
