Zone Split is an Inside Zone run play out of Pistol Doubles Y Off with 11 personnel. The diagram shows the offensive line flowing laterally with zone steps while the HB takes a downhill track behind the pocket, reading the double team and combo blocks up front to find the crease. This is a pure run play designed to attack the interior gaps rather than a man or zone beater through the air, and the primary read progression is the HB keying the play side double team at the point of attack, pressing the hole before bending it backside off the linebacker fit.
Watch linebacker depth at the snap, since stacked or blitzing linebackers can beat the zone track before the offensive line gets movement. Identify if the defense is running a 4-3 or 3-4 front, as odd fronts with a true nose tackle can clog the interior gaps this play targets. Key the play side defensive end and linebacker scrape exchange, since a fast scrape can force the HB to cut back into backside pursuit. Man coverage on the perimeter with single high safety usually leaves the box light enough for this run to hit, so check the safety alignment before the snap. Heavy blitz packages or run blitzes with linebackers crashing downhill can beat this play, so be ready to check to a quick pass or audible if you see extra defenders creeping toward the line.
Use pre-snap motion or check the box count before the snap to confirm you have a numbers advantage against base fronts.
Attack light boxes with 6 or fewer defenders in the box, since Zone Split relies on the offensive line winning combo blocks without extra help.
Pair this play with HB Dive and Counter Read Option from the same set to keep linebackers honest on downhill run fits and prevent them from flowing too fast to the zone track.
Run this on early downs like first and ten or second and short to stay ahead of the chains and set up play action shots later such as PA Cross or PA Slot Cross.
If the defense shows heavy blitz pre-snap, consider hot routing the HB to bounce quicker or motion into Escort HB Wide Zone Wk for a different angle at the edge.
