Orbit PA Cross is a play-action pass out of Pistol Doubles Y Off that uses orbit motion across the backfield to hold the linebackers before the quarterback boots off the fake. The diagram shows a deep crosser breaking from the right side all the way across the field, a corner route stemming from the left outside receiver, a vertical route from the right slot, and the motion man releasing to the flat as a checkdown after selling run action. This is primarily a man beater, since the deep cross creates natural rub traffic and separation against man defenders while the two verticals stretch the top of the coverage, though it can also pick apart zone if the crosser finds the seam behind underneath droppers. The primary read progression starts with the deep crosser working from right to left, then climbs to the corner route on the backside, and checks down to the orbit motion flat route if the defense sits deep.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a defender shadowing the orbit motion man pre-snap, which confirms man coverage and tells the quarterback the deep cross should win against trailing defenders. Key the middle linebacker after the snap, since biting hard on the play-action run fake opens a direct throwing lane for the deep crosser working underneath his drop. Against Cover 3, look for the flat defender and curl defender to collide with the crosser's path, which can clog the route and force the checkdown to the motion man in the flat. Beware of a defense showing Cover 2 with two deep safeties who can sink and rob the vertical routes, since this forces a quicker decision on the cross before the safety rotates over. If the defense brings a linebacker blitz off the edge, the quarterback must recognize it immediately off the play-action fake and get rid of the ball to the flat route or crosser before the pocket collapses.

Usage Tips

Use the orbit motion pre-snap to identify man versus zone based on whether a defender follows the motion man across the formation.

Call this on early downs or first and ten to keep defenses honest against the play-action fake, since the run threat from Pistol sets up the boot convincingly.

If the safety shell shows two high, prioritize the deep crosser since it has the most room to work against split safeties before either can rotate over.

Pair this play with HB Dive or HB Zone earlier in a series so linebackers bite on the run fake and vacate the underneath zones the crosser needs to exploit.

Hot route the corner route receiver into a deep out if you see a cornerback sitting outside in soft zone, giving the quarterback an easier sideline throw instead of forcing the cross into traffic.
