Breakdown

Orbit PA Cross runs a play-action shot off jet motion out of the Pistol Doubles Y Off set, with the motion man orbiting into a shallow crossing route underneath while the backside receiver runs a deep dig that breaks flat across the middle. On the outside, both the X and the flanker (or TE) release on deep vertical routes up the sideline to hold the safeties and clear the middle of the field for the cross and dig. The offensive line sells run blocking on the play fake before sliding into pass protection, making this a classic man beater designed to exploit linebackers biting on the run fake, with the primary read progression starting on the deep dig breaking away from the play fake, then working down to the shallow cross underneath if the linebackers sink into zone drops.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment, if both safeties are shaded deep in a two-high shell you are likely facing Cover 2 or Cover 4 and the deep dig has a tighter window. Watch the linebacker level before the snap, stacked or aggressive linebackers signal run blitz vulnerability to the play fake, which opens up the crossing routes underneath. Post-snap, key the flow of the linebackers, if they bite hard on the run fake the shallow cross and dig will have wide open lanes. Identify any user-controlled lurk defender sitting in the shallow zone, a spy or rat defender camping the middle can jump the crossing route and bait a turnover. This play struggles against disciplined zone defenses that keep linebackers at depth and against Cover 3 sky looks where the flat defender can undercut the shallow cross.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone coverage, if the defender follows the orbit man across the formation you are getting man coverage and the shallow cross becomes a live option against a trailing defender. Call this on early downs or in play-action friendly situations like second and short or first and ten where linebackers are more likely to step up on the run fake. Hot route the outside vertical routes into deep comebacks against soft zone shells like Cover 3 to give your quarterback a quicker high-value throw if the safeties sit deep. Pair this with HB Dive or HB Zone earlier in a drive to condition the defense to respect the run action, then hit them with this shot play once linebackers start crashing downhill. Sequence this with PA Slot Cross or Escort PA Cross to keep the defense guessing between different crossing route depths off similar run action.
