Defensive Reads

Watch the flat defender at the snap since he is the conflict key for the entire RPO, if he sinks under the flat route you should be pulling the ball for the wheel throw. Identify single high safety shells like Cover 3 or Cover 1 before the snap because these leave the wheel route vulnerable to a defender who has to carry it deep without help. Man coverage on the slot or backfield player running the wheel is a major tell, since most linebackers and even some corners cannot stay in phase on the vertical break. Watch for a nickel or slot corner sitting flat footed in a zone shell, as that indicates he will jump the flat route and open the wheel throwing lane behind him. Two high safety shells like Cover 2 or Cover 4 with disciplined underneath zone defenders tend to shut this down since the flat defender stays patient and the deep safety can help over the top on the wheel.

Usage Tips

Check the box count pre-snap and if the defense has one high safety with six or fewer in the box, lean toward handing it off since the numbers favor the run. If you see a corner or nickel crashing hard on flat routes historically, key on him post-snap because he is the conflict defender you are reading for the wheel throw behind him. Use the flat route as bait against zone coverage teams that like to squat underneath, then let the wheel route work vertically once the flat defender commits. Pair this play with HB Dive or HB Zone earlier in a series so the defense starts keying run fits, then come back to this RPO to punish overaggressive linebackers or flat defenders. Against man coverage look immediately to the wheel route matchup, since a linebacker or safety trailing a wheel route out of the backfield or slot is a mismatch you should exploit every time.
