Gt Read Option is a zone read run play out of Pistol Doubles Y Off, built off a gut/inside zone track with the quarterback reading the play side defensive end. The offensive line executes a gap or zone combo blocking scheme up front while the QB keys the unblocked edge defender to decide between handing off on the give path or pulling to run the perimeter himself. This is a run play, not a play-action or RPO, and the primary read progression is simple: crash equals pull and keep, stay home or squeeze equals hand off to the HB on the interior track.
Defensive Reads
Watch the play side defensive end pre-snap and at the snap. If he sits and waits for the mesh, this play struggles and you should hand off into the B gap instead of pulling. Check linebacker depth. Stacked or blitzing linebackers on the play side will fill the read option lane fast and force a quick decision, so be ready to cut the ball back if the backside is clean. Man coverage with off corners is where this play thrives because it removes an extra run defender from the box, since both corners are locked on receivers with no help crashing down. Zone shells like Cover 3 with an aggressive contain end can bait the QB into pulling into a spy or scrape exchange defender, killing the keeper. Recognize the scrape exchange by seeing the linebacker replace the crashing end. User controlled defenders lurking near the mesh point are the biggest threat since a smart user will sit on the QB read and jump the keeper. If you see a user spying the backfield, take the give and trust your interior blocking instead.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and only call this against light boxes or when you have a numbers advantage on the edge you plan to attack.
Identify whether the defense is playing assignment football on the read defender. If the CPU or user defender consistently crashes down the line, key the pull and get to the perimeter immediately.
Use manual motion or a hot route on the receivers to hold safeties if you are facing a two high shell, since freeing up the alley defender can shut down the keeper lane.
Pair this with Counter Read Option and Y Lead Read Option in the same set to keep the defense guessing on which gap the QB will actually attack, since all three share similar mesh point action.
Best called on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and medium) when you want a low risk, high reward gap read that also sets up your play action shots later in the series.
