Counter Y is a gap scheme power run out of Pistol Doubles Y Off with 11 personnel, showing two receivers stacked left, a single receiver split right, and a tight end plus running back in the backfield near the QB. The offensive line pulls the backside guard and puller through the play side gap to lead block while the play side tackle and tight end down block to seal the edge, creating a natural lane for the ball carrier to follow the pullers. This is a pure run play designed to attack gap integrity and overloaded fronts. The primary read progression starts with the puller path, hitting inside off the lead blocker before bouncing outside if the alley is sealed.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, count the box defenders and check safety depth since a light box or single high safety opens up cutback lanes for this counter action. Watch the play side defensive end and outside linebacker, if they crash hard down the line the counter puller can seal them for an explosive cutback. Post-snap, key the flow of the linebackers, if they overpursue the initial flow direction the ball carrier can cut back against the grain for a big gain. User-controlled defenders sitting in the backside gap or reading the puller's path can blow this play up before it develops, so avoid forcing it against disciplined gap control defenses. Nano blitzes or aggressive edge pressure from the play side can beat the puller to the point of attack, so respect five or six man pressure looks and consider audibling if you see it pre-snap.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short to stay ahead of the chains and keep defenses honest.
Check the defensive front pre-snap for a 4-3 over or 3-4 look with light box counts since Counter Y thrives when the count favors the offense.
Use motion or a play fake tag if available to freeze linebackers before the snap and slow their run fits.
Pair Counter Y with HB Dive and HB Zone from the same set to keep the defense guessing between gap and zone run concepts out of an identical pre-snap look.
Follow up a successful Counter Y with PA Cross or PA Slot Cross from the same formation to punish linebackers who start cheating up on run fakes.
